YouPop the Question
What is the YouPop Applicatoin?
YouPop allows you to create small quizzes or polls that you can share with your friends. Go nuts asking your peers which celebrity is crazier or test their knowledge on 80s cartoon characters. The YouPop application links whatever YouPops you have created at YouPop.com to your Facebook page for easy access. You can also add YouPops created buy other Facebook users onto your own page.
YouPop creation is extremely simple. First you pose the question and select the category. Then you add media content from the web or from your own computer (you are limited to 3 pictures/videos). The next step is to select one of three “flavorsâ€
- Best of the Best: Where viewers pick their favorite of the 3 pictures/videos
- Star Rating: Your YouPop is rated 1 through 5 by users
- React-i-con: People express their feelings on your YouPop by deeming it good, bad or ugly.
Finally you click on publish and send your creation to your friends. Here’s the one I created.
To add it to your profile, simply go into the application via Facebook Select My YouPops then click on Post to my Facebook profile.
Pros:
- Simple to use
- Good for brief moments of distraction
- Allows you to use YouPops created by other people.
Cons:
- Limited to only 3 pictures/videos, but this is probably to help keep things simple.

What is the Enviro Application?
The Enviro Application allows users to show their friends what actions they are taking to better the environment. It asks the question “What are you doing for the environment?” and gives a variety of answers you can check such as: I carpool, I bought a hybrid car, or I re-use my shopping bags. Besides showing your friends what you are doing to better Mother Earth, it also gives statistical feedback on “What we are good at” and “What needs some work”. The sole purpose behind the Enviro Application is to promote social responsibility through our actions and our friend’s actions as well.
Enviro Pros
- Promotes environment-friendly actions by letting your friends know what you are doing FOR the environment.
- Allows you to see, by percentage, what is and isn’t being done for the environment.
- Layout is simple and clean.
Enviro Cons
- Limited number of options to select from the “What are you doing for the Environment? list.”
- No friend invite capabilities.
- Other than showing your friends how green you are, there isn’t much you can do with this application.
I think this application has some great potential as far as promoting social responsibility. When you look at a friend’s profile and notice that they are air-drying their clothes instead of using a dryer appliance or even something as little as turning off the water when they brush their teeth, it sends the message: if they can do it, why don’t I?
People who download this application might be turned off by the limited capabilities and options, but I don’t think that is what the developers had in mind when they set out to make this application. There is only one reason for this application and that is to promote social responsibility to your friends through your actions. Let’s face it, we now live in a world where being seen as green or eco-friendly is not only progressive, but desirable.

What is the Zeitgeist application?
The Zeitgeist application gives you a set of statistics in a bar graph format surrounding your friends. There are 11 categories of statistics that you can look at such as: Sex, Political Views, Relationship status, Top 5 Activities, Top 5 Movies and a few more. The statistics are aggregated, so you don’t have to worry about any of your friends being left out.
Zeitgeist Pros
- Pretty straightforward stats
- Layout is clean and simple.
- Gives users an idea of what their friends are like overall.
Zeitgeist Cons
- Doesn’t show stats on sexual interests or religion due to Facebook Platform privacy restrictions. Yeah, whatever…
- Only 11 categories of statistics.
- An application that you would probably only use at once and remove it.
Overall, this application struck out. Sure… it might be fun to see statistics of your friends relationship status when you are bored, but after you look at these stats chances are you will never look at them again. It reminds me of something I would find in my middle school yearbook and we all know how often we look at those.
