What is the Wolfram Tones Application

I’m a big music fan. I’ve managed to max out my mp3 player and about 75% of my hard drive is music. I also relish every chance I get to make my own music and was very eager to play around with what the Wolfram Tones application had to offer.

I installed the application but had an initial problem playing some of the music. Luckily there was an easy to follow guide to set up Quicktime (which is a requirement to use Wolfram) to play MIDI files.

I don’t quite understand the science behind how the compositions work, but everything is based off on “scientific paradigm of Stephen Wolfram’s New Kind of Science, Wolfram Tones instantly generates unique, organic musical compositions based on algorithms called cellular automata. ”

It’s not hard to mess around and make your own music. I didn’t understand the rule or seed variations (instructions are provided), but basically they are template. I moved onto the instrumentation tab where I could select what instruments to include, and then onto pitch and timing.

After you have created a suitable song, you can save it to your online jukebox to share with others, or you can download it as a MIDI file onto your desktop that can be converted into an mp3 or WAV file that can be played on MP3 players.

Pros

• lots of variation
• ability to save your work
• lots of fun

Cons

• got a horrible screeching sound when ever I’d change instruments. It seemed like every time the project I was working on was reset it made this sound like a record being scratched.

TalkShoe-Community Calling

What is the TalkShoe-Community Calling Application?

Tired of gchatting? Still using AIM to stay in contact with your friends?  Well maybe you should join the bandwagon that is internet calling.  How can you do that, you ask?  It’s easy, add the TalkShoe application and then join in on the fun.

After installing the application you will be asked input your phone number or you can go onto TalkShoe’s website and create an account.  After that, it’s smooth sailing.  Call up other facebook friends or talkshoe users.  Listen to the auditory equivalent of blog, which I find pretty cool.

The application is reminiscent of those old talk lines, which I got in trouble for using once when I was in grade school.  There’s something simply amusing, yet a bit voyeuristic in listening in on random community phone calls…especially when it’s just two people talking.

TalkShoe is supposedly compatible with regular telephones, cells phones, Skype and VoIP.  I fiddled around with my cell phone and was going to test drive VoIP but couldn’t find my headset.  I had no problems, except that it’s important to remember that when using services that charge (like cellphones) that TalkShoe isn’t free.  I had a blast and it was nice way to talk to some friends that I haven’t seen in awhile.

Pros

• create your own community so you and all your friends can chat
• save your phone calls
• run live blog shows (or listen to them)

Cons

• there was a little big of lag when listening through an internet browser and bit of static, but this is probably VoIPs fault and the speakers talking to close to the microphone

Serious Internet

What is the Serious Internet application?

Sometimes people can take life too seriously, luckily there are facebook application developers out there that realize this and can provide lol worthy quick fix. That’s exactly what the Serious Internet application does.

The application adds a box to your profile where a daily humorous picture can be seen. Pictures are easily changeable with single click. All images come from the data base located at the Serious Internet website.

Pros

• lolcats, orly owls, random pictures that bring out guffaws
• links are provided with pictures for easy sharing
• simple fun application

Cons

• Would be a nice to have a way to select the picture you want instead of the selection just being random

Caption.iT

What is the Caption.iT application?

Tired of the regular facebook album pictures? Well now you can spice them up using the Caption.iT application. With this application, you can customize various pictures by adding your own personal little messages. With some pictures (easily recognizable by the small picture icon in the top right of the picture), you can even customize them by adding your own pictures.

Here’s a few that I made:

Once installed, the application allows your friends to post new captioned photos to your profile, by using the link provided in your profile. This is another one of the fun little applications that makes it easy for you to customize your facebook page.

Also be sure the check out Caption.It’s regular website to see what else they have to offer.

Pros

• Easy to use
• Can use you own pictures, allowing even more customization of your message

Cons

• The selection of images is limited. Approximately 96 different pictures spread across 3 pages.

What is the Throw A Quote Application?

We’ve all experienced the superpoke application where you or your friends can “poke” each other by lighting a menorah to throwing a sheep. Sure, actions speak louder than words, but what if that just doesn’t accurately convey your message? Well never fear, Throw A Quote is here, where your actions can be words.

This application lets you select from a plethora of famous quotes from movies or even real people. In addition to the quote, you can attach icons to decorate your quote and even add a personal message. The application even allows you to throw quotes at yourself, just in case you either don’t have many friends or to accurately represent yourself by further decorating your facebook page. When installed, the application will even give a random daily quote that will be posted on your main page for everyone to see.

Pros

• Lots of quotes to choose from
• More quotes being added to the datebase
• Easy to use interface

Cons

• Would be nice to be able to add your own quotes

YouPop the Question

What is the YouPop Applicatoin?

YouPop allows you to create small quizzes or polls that you can share with your friends.  Go nuts asking your peers which celebrity is crazier or test their knowledge on 80s cartoon characters. The YouPop application links whatever YouPops you have created at YouPop.com to your Facebook page for easy access. You can also add YouPops created buy other Facebook users onto your own page.

YouPop creation is extremely simple. First you pose the question and select the category. Then you add media content from the web or from your own computer (you are limited to 3 pictures/videos). The next step is to select one of three “flavors”

• Best of the Best: Where viewers pick their favorite of the 3 pictures/videos
• Star Rating: Your YouPop is rated 1 through 5 by users
• React-i-con: People express their feelings on your YouPop by deeming it good, bad or ugly.

Finally you click on publish and send your creation to your friends. Here’s the one I created.

To add it to your profile, simply go into the application via Facebook Select My YouPops then click on Post to my Facebook profile.

Pros:

• Simple to use
• Good for brief moments of distraction
• Allows you to use YouPops created by other people.

Cons:

• Limited to only 3 pictures/videos, but this is probably to help keep things simple.

What is the Biotrend Facebook Application?

The Biotrend Facebook Application is a lot of fun. It creates a biotrend based on the day you were born. For those not familiar with biotrends, the idea is that your body and mind go through rhythms throughout your life. That’s why some days you feel great physically and other days you’re tired as a dog. It’s kind of like a horoscope for your life. Most credible scientists discredit biotrends, but they’re still a lot of fun to look at.

In addition to doing biotrends, this the Biotrend App also shows your compatibility with your Facebook friends based on your zodiac sign. This was pretty cool to play around with. I noticed a few glitches though. The app said was the most compatible with some friends while simultaneously being the least compatible with them. It only happened with a few friends. Nothing major.

And to top it off, the Biotrend Facebook app gives you your daily horoscope. This app is your one shop stop for all your mystical needs.

Biotrends Pros

• Instantly creates a biorythem chart based on your birthday. The app does all the work for you. No need to enter in any info.
• The biotrend chart is very nice looking
• See your compatibility with all your Facebook friends based on zodiac signs. This was by far the coolest feature.

Biotrends Cons

• There were a few glitches with some of the matches. I was told I was the most compatible with some friends while simultaneously being told as I was least compatible
• Other than that, this was a real fun and clever app.

Kiwee postCards Facebook Application

What is the Kiwee postCards Facebook Application?

Kiwee postCards Facebook app lets you create and customize postCards to send to your Facebook friends. Creating a post card is a snap with the Kiwee postCards app. You have hundreds of fun and creative cards to choose from. The postcards are organized by categories such as Naughty, Funny, and Flirt. What’s great is that some of the postCards are animations or videos. Pretty cool. After you select the postCard you want to use, you can then customize the text and send it off to your friend.

• Couldn’t find any! This is a simple, yet fun app. Great work!

What is the Hookup Facebook Application?

The Hookup Facebook app lets you easily make new connections with like minded people on Facebook. After answering a series of short questions on your likes and interests, The Hookup app will then find other Hookup app users that match your profile. Results are listed in the order of closest match to least closest match.

The Hookup app isn’t just for finding love on Facebook. It allows you to find people similar to you for business, bar crawling, shopping, or studying.

I was really impressed this app. It was fun to answer the questions and the results were accurate. In this age where making social connections is the key to success, the Hookup is definitely a useful tool.
