What is the Jetsetter Application?

People like to travel.  People like to discuss how much they have traveled, where they’ve been, where they are going next, and more importantly comparing their experiences against other frequent travelers.  The Jetsetter application, let’s you take this one-upsmanship to the next level.

Jetsetter easily lets you see how many miles you have traveled on your trips, and see who among your friends is more world traveled.    I haven’t been anywhere in awhile, unless you count going home for the holidays and that was about 300 miles (there and back), so I can’t really compete with anyone using the application.

You are able to see where you friends have gone and comment on their adventures.  And if you feel some wanderlust, the Jetsetter application has a quicklink to VibeAgent to help you find the right hotel and travel arrangements. Admittedly, the whole application seems to be an interesting way for VibeAgent to advertise.

Pros

•  Simple and easy to use application
• Easy to see where you and others have been

Cons

• Experienced some errors at the moment.  The Fleet section (your friends) had problems loading.  Also took a couple of tries for the actual application to load.

Wolfram Tones

What is the Wolfram Tones Application

I’m a big music fan. I’ve managed to max out my mp3 player and about 75% of my hard drive is music. I also relish every chance I get to make my own music and was very eager to play around with what the Wolfram Tones application had to offer.

I installed the application but had an initial problem playing some of the music. Luckily there was an easy to follow guide to set up Quicktime (which is a requirement to use Wolfram) to play MIDI files.

I don’t quite understand the science behind how the compositions work, but everything is based off on “scientific paradigm of Stephen Wolfram’s New Kind of Science, Wolfram Tones instantly generates unique, organic musical compositions based on algorithms called cellular automata. ”

It’s not hard to mess around and make your own music. I didn’t understand the rule or seed variations (instructions are provided), but basically they are template. I moved onto the instrumentation tab where I could select what instruments to include, and then onto pitch and timing.

After you have created a suitable song, you can save it to your online jukebox to share with others, or you can download it as a MIDI file onto your desktop that can be converted into an mp3 or WAV file that can be played on MP3 players.

Pros

• lots of variation
• ability to save your work
• lots of fun

Cons

• got a horrible screeching sound when ever I’d change instruments. It seemed like every time the project I was working on was reset it made this sound like a record being scratched.

Serious Internet

What is the Serious Internet application?

Sometimes people can take life too seriously, luckily there are facebook application developers out there that realize this and can provide lol worthy quick fix. That’s exactly what the Serious Internet application does.

The application adds a box to your profile where a daily humorous picture can be seen. Pictures are easily changeable with single click. All images come from the data base located at the Serious Internet website.

Pros

• lolcats, orly owls, random pictures that bring out guffaws
• links are provided with pictures for easy sharing
• simple fun application

Cons

• Would be a nice to have a way to select the picture you want instead of the selection just being random

iEat

What is the iEat application?

It appears that the “i” phenomenon is still going strong, with the lower case vowel being attached to anything that involves electronics and has a chance to be trendy. While I’m in the opinion that it is completely overused, it does have its successes like the iPhone or the iEat facebook application.

iEat provides a simple solution to searching for restaurants in various areas and lets you share your feelings, by reviewing them, with your friends. Searching for restaurants is easy. Type in the name or put in a city/state to see what’s in your area. Another option is selecting the WTLE 100 for your city, which brings a pop up window to browse the top 100 rated restaurants (according to the WTLE select) for that area.

Rating restaurants is simplified where you can give it your opinion by granting the place 1 to 5 forks. Reviews are done separately and show up in your profile, where you can display your favorites, your top 5 restaurants, your intended dining plans, places you want to try, your friends on iEat, and your food profile-a way to demonstrate your eating habits.

The restaurants that are listed each have their own sort of profile that provides the address and phone number, the places website, various other information (does it have patio seating, price range, etc.) and shows the most recent ratings and reviews for the establishment. Each restaurant has it’s own wall, where comments can be posted.

Pros

• Easy way to browse restaurants in your area and see what people think of them
• Can send invitations to your friends so everyone can meet up for a meal
• Grubn’ section let’s you post pictures of yourself eating that other iEat users can view
• Highly detailed restaurant profiles

Cons

• The cities that are covered are limited
• You can add new restaurants to the list (iEat provides a way to search the internet), but this too is limited in what can be selected and it’s hard to narrow down the search.

mixpixx

What is the mixpixx application?

There’s that old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.  What if you took a bunch of pictures and made it one big picture?  Would that picture be worth a million words?  Well such a rhetorical question may finally be answered with mixpixx.

Once mixpixx is installed you can create collages that are made from the pictures in your friends’ facebook profiles.  The collage has a stained glass look to it, the pictures are connected with jagged edges.  Customization of the picture includes adding a border of varying thickness and color.  If you don’t like how it’s arranged, you can reshuffle the image.

The resulting image can be saved in your mixpixx album, which is automatically created for you in your photo album section of your facebook profile.  Images can be printed off, saved, or posted on your website.

Here’s the one that I made

It’s a pretty simple process and a fun application.  I would like to see the ability to use other pictures from you facebook albums or to be able to have certain pictures repeated.  At this point you have to select at least three people.  It seems you may have more variety in creating collages at their website.

Pros

• Easy way to create memorable images that capture your friends’ profile pictures
• Automatically created photo album to save your collages

Cons

• Can only use profile pictures
• Picture arragment is completely random

My Food Fix

What is the My Food Fix Application?

My Food Fix is an application dedicated to those of us who are food aficionados. You can tell your friends what you are currently are snacking on and even upload pictures of delicious items to invoke a visual foodgasm.

The strongest point of My Food Fix is the ability to review restaurants. You get to list the overall quality, the quality of the food, rate the service, and evaluate the price. You can even recommend specific menu items. All reviews are saved on your Food Fix profile so your friends can see your reviews (and vice versa) and your favorite places to dine.  If you find a place you particularly like, you can add it to your list of favorites which is then posted to your facebook profile.

Reviews are also posted by network, so you can easily see what people in the same area liked or didn’t like about local restaurants. An excellent feature of the review section is that restaurant’s address and a map (linked to google maps) is automatically provided.

After conducting reviews, My Food Fix automatically creates a “My Tags” list for easy browsing of dining establishments with similar topics. It also lets you see what your friends are currently interested in or what they are craving.

What I would like to see is a way to provide links to a restaurants’ websites or contact information like phone numbers to make reservations. It would also be cool to have the ability to upload menus.

Pros

• Big potential for seeing what’s good in your area
• Reviews are easy to do and everything is organized

Cons

• Not really a con, but you can select only one preferred location (what I assume is your network). It would be nice to view more than one location at once or to search by city for those of us who travel.
• Unsure what the “peanuts” are for
• No way to edit your review

Caption.iT

What is the Caption.iT application?

Tired of the regular facebook album pictures? Well now you can spice them up using the Caption.iT application. With this application, you can customize various pictures by adding your own personal little messages. With some pictures (easily recognizable by the small picture icon in the top right of the picture), you can even customize them by adding your own pictures.

Here’s a few that I made:

Once installed, the application allows your friends to post new captioned photos to your profile, by using the link provided in your profile. This is another one of the fun little applications that makes it easy for you to customize your facebook page.

Also be sure the check out Caption.It’s regular website to see what else they have to offer.

Pros

• Easy to use
• Can use you own pictures, allowing even more customization of your message

Cons

• The selection of images is limited. Approximately 96 different pictures spread across 3 pages.

What is the Throw A Quote Application?

We’ve all experienced the superpoke application where you or your friends can “poke” each other by lighting a menorah to throwing a sheep. Sure, actions speak louder than words, but what if that just doesn’t accurately convey your message? Well never fear, Throw A Quote is here, where your actions can be words.

This application lets you select from a plethora of famous quotes from movies or even real people. In addition to the quote, you can attach icons to decorate your quote and even add a personal message. The application even allows you to throw quotes at yourself, just in case you either don’t have many friends or to accurately represent yourself by further decorating your facebook page. When installed, the application will even give a random daily quote that will be posted on your main page for everyone to see.

Pros

• Lots of quotes to choose from
• More quotes being added to the datebase
• Easy to use interface

Cons

• Would be nice to be able to add your own quotes

YouPop the Question

What is the YouPop Applicatoin?

YouPop allows you to create small quizzes or polls that you can share with your friends.  Go nuts asking your peers which celebrity is crazier or test their knowledge on 80s cartoon characters. The YouPop application links whatever YouPops you have created at YouPop.com to your Facebook page for easy access. You can also add YouPops created buy other Facebook users onto your own page.

YouPop creation is extremely simple. First you pose the question and select the category. Then you add media content from the web or from your own computer (you are limited to 3 pictures/videos). The next step is to select one of three “flavors”

• Best of the Best: Where viewers pick their favorite of the 3 pictures/videos
• Star Rating: Your YouPop is rated 1 through 5 by users
• React-i-con: People express their feelings on your YouPop by deeming it good, bad or ugly.

Finally you click on publish and send your creation to your friends. Here’s the one I created.

To add it to your profile, simply go into the application via Facebook Select My YouPops then click on Post to my Facebook profile.

Pros:

• Simple to use
• Good for brief moments of distraction
• Allows you to use YouPops created by other people.

Cons:

• Limited to only 3 pictures/videos, but this is probably to help keep things simple.

Politics In Canada Application

What is the Politics in Canada Application?

If you are Canadian (or at least wish you were) and are interested in current political affairs, then Politics in Canada is the application for you. This application allows you to demonstrate what political party you support. After installing the application, all you have to do is enter your postal code, then select the party that you support, and an icon (representing your political affiliation) will be placed on a map of your province.

I’ve been watching this application for the past week as more people join up. This allowed me to see what areas supported what party. A nice graph is also available to show support throughout the nation and by province. The goal of the application is to raise awareness and to get people involved politically. This is seems to be successfully accomplished by providing links to all the party’s websites.

Pros

• The maps are linked up with Google Maps, allowing you to easily see the whole country
• Everything is broken down conveniently nationally and provincially
• Links to the political party’s official websites

Cons

• Would be nice to see a description of each political party, but it seems that the developer is already on top of this and should be appearing soon.
