What is the Top Friends Facebook Application?

Top Friends was developed by Slide. It allows you to rank your friends so everyone can see who’s your “best best friend” and not just your “best friend.” When you open the app, you’re taken to a page with 24 different squares numbered 1-24. You then drag and drop your friends pics in to the order you want to rank them; 1 being the best and 24 being not so good. You’re able to dictate how many top friends you’ll show. You have a range between 4 and 24. Your top friends will show up in the left column in your profile page.

This is one of the more popular apps on Facebook right now with over 5 million Facebookers using it.

Top Friends Cons

• Why only 24 top friends? People should say how many friends they can make top friends.
• Too much like Myspace? Many people on the Top Friends message board are saying this app is making Facebook too much like MySpace. But then again, you don’t have to load this app if you don’t want to.

I can understand the appeal of Top Friends. Facebook has diluted the word “friend” so that it now means someone you just met randomly. It’s nice to differentiate your “Facebook friends” from your real friends. However, it is kind of childish to rank your friends. It reminds me of my being in third grade again. So, I also understand the turn off.
